The Collie Association Sub-Group - Open Show
Sunday 12th May 2019 Judge: Rough Collies - Judith Gregory (Tonkory)

My profound apologies for the lateness of this critique. My husband and I have both been in hospital and there has been some what of a crisis at Tonkory over the last few months – however a semblance of order is now resuming. I thoroughly enjoyed my judging and experience at the Collie Association. I was looked after so well by the committee and my stewards throughout the day. I had some excellent classes with quality dogs to choose from. Thank you, exhibitors, for your entries.

Class 1 – Veteran Dog
(2 entries, 0 absent)
1st 46 Walton’s Markenfield Sirius Black At Walstar. This dog was 10 years old and carried his age well. Lovely head with well shaped eye. Moved round the ring well but has become close behind probably with age.
2nd 40 Skinner’s Nikal It’s Gud To Be Back. 8 year old tri-coloured dog, good wedge shaped head. Excellent hind angulation with good bend of stifle. A little loose at the shoulder and out at the elbow now.

Class 2 Minor Puppy Dog (0, 0)

Class 3 Puppy Dog (4, 1, 1 withdrawn)
1st 49 Wray-Ramsden’s Takhisis Magic Of Dreams. 9 month old tricoloured dog puppy. Very compact young boy, just long enough with a lovely straight front and an exceptionally good back end. Lovely ears which he used to great effect. Best Puppy Dog
2nd 29 Newton’s Fiocara Brave Explorer. Very sweet head and expression, lovely flat skull. Nicely sloping croup and good tail set. Slightly fine for me.

Class 4 Junior Dog (3, 0)
1st 19 Lockyer’s Once Upon A Time Du Close De Seawind With Gataj (Imp Fra). 15 month old, very balanced young dog in profile. Sweet head and expression, almond shaped eyes, well set ears. Correct dentition. Moved well round the ring.
2nd 11 Jones’ Brooklinson Black Diamond With Dancol. Masculine tri-coloured young dog, with lovely dark eye which was well set. No mistaking this dog was male, without being coarse. Extremely good back end which produced excellent profile movement, having said that his croup slightly falls away.
3rd 8 Davis’ Monsolana Read Of Me Via Rosschell.

Class 5 Novice Dog (1, withdrawn)

Class 6 Graduate Dog (3, 1 absent)
1st 20 Lockyer’s’ Think Of Me Prince Of Sonlight At Gataj. Such a pleasing dog to judge, very balanced all through with a lovely head, excellent eye shape and well set ears. Very sound coming and going and flowed round the ring.
2nd 11 Jones’ Brooklinson Black Diamond With Dancol.

Class 7 Post Graduate Dog (1, 0)
1st 14 Lister’s Jotars Platinum Moon At Newarp. Now 3½ years old; I have judged this lovely blue merle dog before and admired him. He is maturing well and is still full of life. Lovely broken merling in full bloom. Very masculine expression and sometimes has his mind on other things, understandably. Good pigmentation, good length of neck and excellent shoulder angulation, firm top line but a bit happy with his tail.

Class 8 Limit Dog (5, 0)
1st 4 Benton and Smith’s Brooklynson El Dorado. This lovely 2 year old dog won this class and best dog on his exceptional movement. Very animated and attentive; presented himself well. Lovely shoulder, firm top line and good hind quarters with excellent bend of stifle. Nice sloping croup and lovely long well carried tail. Moved soundly up and back and really covered the ground on the gait round. He has qualities that are valuable to the breed. Best Dog
2nd 5 Cooney’s Jopium Danny Boy At Lingwell. Another lovely 2½year old dog with a lovely head although stop is slightly pronounced. Beautiful balanced outline in profile and moved well. Res Best Dog
3rd 17 Lockyer’s Gataj Beau Of Surprises.
4th 13 Kenny’s Lanlin Benji At Lessaund.

Class 9 Open Dog (2, 0)
1st 50 Wray-Ramsden’s Takhisis Trick Or Treat. 5 year old very masculine tri-coloured dog. Balanced head with well shaped dark eye; would like more lift to ears to give better expression. Lovely croup and bend of stifle which produced good movement with plenty of drive from behind.
2nd 46 Walton’s Markenfield Sirius Black Of Walstar. Best Veteran Dog & Best Veteran

Class 10 Veteran Bitch (4, 3)
1st 32 Newton’s Fiocora Sweet Rhapsody. 8½ year old bitch, very feminine expression. Good length of neck supporting a lovely well-proportioned head. Moved very soundly for an 8 year old up and moved round the ring really well. Thank you for bringing her. Reserve Best Bitch & Reserve BOB

Class 11 Minor Puppy Bitch (1, 0)
1st 7 Davis’ Beldones Uptown Girl Of Rosschell. 7 month old really pretty bitch which I enjoyed judging. Very sweet head with well shaped eyes and very well used ears. Standing in profile she presented a balanced outline. Good length of neck, excellent coat, nicely sloping croup, good tail set and carriage. Movement very good for a baby. I shall watch her progress with interest. Best Puppy Bitch & Best Puppy In Show

Class 12 Puppy Bitch (2, 0)
1st 44 Tame’s Oh Suzanna Du Clos De Seawind At Rahlissa. Two bitches in this class and both very promising with excellent coats, good croups and tail sets. This bitch won 1st place on her movement up and back.
2nd 31 Newton’s Sweet Victoria. I preferred the head and expression on this lovely bitch but the winner was sounder up and back.

Class 13 Junior Bitch (8, 3)
What lovely class of quality bitches and a delight to judge.
1st 2 Beadon’s and Arrowsmith’s Saganana Blue Diamond. For me this bitch was the star of the show. Almost 18 month old blue merle bitch of excellent quality. Well balanced head, constantly alert and responsive to handler. Lovely well placed and well shaped dark eye. Ears used the whole time. Balanced wedge shaped head supported by strong neck of good length. Firm top line, good croup and tail set. Excellent angulation fore and aft which allowed her to move with superb reach and drive. Best Bitch & BOB
2nd 45 Walder’s Hanvale Polly Shelby. Lovely gold and white girl with gorgeous head and eye. Excellent dentition and remarkably good hind angulation with excellent tail set and carriage.

Class 14 Novice Bitch (2, 0)
1st 45 Walder’s Hanvale Polly Shelby. Second in Junior Bitch.
2nd 48 Wray-Ramsden’s Danfrebek Lady Madonna. 17 month old tri bitch. Lovely head and excellent hind angulation and top line. Would prefer tighter feet and for the ears to have more lift. Rather sluggish on the go around.

Class 15 Graduate Bitch (6, 2)
1st 2 Beadon’s and Arrowsmith’s Saganana Blue Diamond. Winner of Junior Bitch and I learned afterwards this gave her the final point for her Junior Warrant – Congratulations!
2nd 15 Lister’s Ladnar Quickstep at Newarp. Another lovely bitch in this strong class. Maturing on the right lines, feminine expression and grand on the move, unlucky to meet 1st today; will surely have her day.
3rd 26 Milligan’s Ladnar Trust In Me.

Class 16 Post Graduate Bitch (5, 5)

Class 17 Limit Bitch (7, 3)
1st 22 Macdonald’s Brooklynson Hepburn At Rossavon. 4½ year old shaded sable bitch of a different type to many in the ring. Beautifully presented with a balanced head, good eye and ear placement. Good length of neck and firm top line. Excellent length, set and carriage of tail. Stunning movement which was ground covering with plenty of reach and drive. I loved this bitch.
2nd 27 Newman’s Phreelancer Phashionista. Smaller bitch than winner; superbly presented with a very sweet head, but didn’t have the movement of 1st.

Class18 Open Bitch (2, 0)
1st 10 Hodges’ Jopium Love Heart JW. Glorious head and expression. Dark eye and well placed ears. Excellent hind action; was very balanced in profile and when she moved, she really covered the ground. Reserve Best Bitch & Reserve BOB
2nd 47 Wray-Ramsden’s Beldones Duchess Of Dreams JW. Similar in type to 1st, very sweet expression, good balanced head. Excellent coat, good tail set, length and carriage. Not quite as firm in top line as 1st.
